TEACHING SIMPLE PRESENT TENSE THROUGH ILLUSTRATION CARTOONS TO THE SEVENTH GRADE STUDENTS OF TAMANSISWA JUNIOR HIGH SCHOOL OF PALEMBANG



Description:
The title of this thesis was “Teaching Simple Present Tense Through Illustration Cartoons to the Seventh Grade Students of Tamansiswa Junior High School of Palembang”. The problem of this research was “The seventh grade students of Tamansiswa Junior High School of Palembang still have some difficulties in using simple present tense, especially the verbal add of –s or –es and the use of do/does”. The objective of the research was to find out whether or not it is effective to teach simple present tense through illustration cartoons to the seventh grade students of Tamansiswa Junior High School of Palembang. This thesis used pre-experimental method. The population of this research was the seventh grade students of Tamansiswa Junior High School of Palembang, with the total number are 104 students. The sample of this research was 33 students. The kind of pre-experimental design namely pretest-posttest and single group design. The data were collected through a written test and analyzed by using t-test to know the significance differences between the students’ achievement in the pre-test and post-test. It was calculated by using manual and SPSS (Statistical Package for the Social Sciences) 17.0 program. The result of test calculation showed that average score in the pre-test single groups was 48.5, the average score in the post-test single group was 65.2. The result of t-test obtained was 9.65 and it was higher than 1.694 as the critical value of the t-table with (df) n=32 at the level of significance 0.05 (5%) for one tailed test. It indicated that alternate hypothesis (Ha) was accepted and null hypothesis was rejected because t-obt exceed the value of t-tab. Based on the research, it could be concluded that using illustration cartoons is effective to teach simple present tense to the seventh grade students of Tamansiswa Junior High School of Palembang.
